Winged Terrors
MOTHMAN
On November 12, 1966, five men who were digging a grave at a cemetery near Clendenin, West Virginia, claimed to have seen a man-like figure fly low from the trees over their heads. This is often identified as the first known sighting of what became known as the Mothman. Shortly thereafter, on November 15, 1966, two young couples from Point Pleasant, Roger and Linda Scarberry and Steve and Mary Mallette, told police they saw a large grey creature whose eyes "glowed red" when the car's headlights picked it up. They described it as a "large flying man with ten-foot wings", following their car while they were driving in an area outside of town known as "the TNT area", the site of a former World War II munitions plant. During the next few days, other people reported similar sightings. Two volunteer firemen who saw it said it was a "large bird with red eyes". Mason County Sheriff George Johnson commented that he believed the sightings were due to an unusually large heron he termed a "shitepoke". Contractor Newell Partridge told Johnson that when he aimed a flashlight at a creature in a nearby field its eyes glowed "like bicycle reflectors", and blamed buzzing noises from his television set and the disappearance of his German Shepherd dog on the creature. Wildlife biologist Dr. Robert L. Smith at West Virginia University told reporters that descriptions and sightings all fit the sandhill crane, a large American crane almost as high as a man with a seven-foot wingspan featuring circles of reddish coloring around the eyes, and that the bird may have wandered out of its migration route. This particular crane was unrecognized at first because it was not native to this region. After the December 15, 1967 collapse of the Silver Bridge and the death of 46 people, the incident gave rise to the legend and connected the Mothman sightings to the bridge collapse.
Decades later the Chicago region began experiencing a collective case of the heebie-jeebies ever since reports of a giant, flying, winged humanoid began surfacing in 2011.
Mothman is a harbinger of doom and has since been reported by others around the world, his appearance often, but not always, preceding some kind of disaster. The creature has been seen in Omensvale a few times, it's arrival usually foreboding some kind of tragedy. Other than that, the creature doesn't interact with people, other than being drawn to those whom the tragedy will affect.
No one, neither natural or preternatural knows what the Mothman is. It's speculated that it's some kind of demon that feeds on disasters and ill-fated happenings. High Strangeness is always elevated by it's presence, or perhaps there's a relationship between it and increased peculiarities.
Whatever it is, it can be harmed by modern weaponry. People have shot at it and hit nothing. One person struck the creature with a car and it just bounced off with no damage, the vehicle having to be written off from the damage. There have been a few cases where people have been carried off by the creature, never to be seen again.
In our setting the Mothman is to be used mainly as a harbinger of events that will affect the city or a character.
THUNDER BIRDS
Thunderbirds are a legend going back to the Native Americans. These oversized birds were said to hide out in the forest, and if one was spotted, it meant there was a storm on the way. Over the last hundred years or so, there have still been sightings along the I-80 Frontier, Pine Creek Valley, Dark Skies, and Elk Country landscapes of the Pennsylvania Wilds. They've also been sighted in New York, specifically over Omensvale. These creatures are fairly benevolent, and their appearance always coincide with large powerful storms.
GARGOYLES
These monstrosities are grotesques that have been brought to live through magic, in that, they are not unlike golems. As per their legend, these creatures come to life at night, and return to stone by day. They are violent and merciless killers, seeking flesh and blood to quench their hunger. When flesh, they are vulnerable to damage, but like most preternatural beings, modern weaponry is useless against them. If by day their statues are broken, and they have recently fed, blood will be found within them. These creatures vary in size, and all are very strong and durable.
