Why are we 3-1-2? Some sites tout a 3-3-3 rating as if they're preventing the oppression of an authoritarian regime but realistically If you want a safe writing environment it's wise to lower the ratings of sex and violence. Offensive language is part of life, it's unrealistic to sensor it in a ADULT environment but we don't want to read amateur porn. There's no place for that here and when it comes to violence we draw the line at gratuitous torture and sadomasochism because of the type of people it attracts.
RULES & INSTRUCTIONS
1. We expect four things of a member:
Civility, Respect, Common Sense and Maturity.
Do we have bad days? Of course. Is this the kind of place to take our shit out on people because of a bad day? No. Save it for your writing and remember to respect our RPG rating.
Are you from another writing site? Perhaps you even run one and you feel like a change. Well, if you're NOT, you're a rarity. You know how site's frown on people talking about other sites or plugging their own sites? We don't care if you do that here. At some point people have to be realistic and ask themselves why we're all so concerned with maintaining these walls? They don't help anyone, least of all writers. Exclusivity is not going to make a person stay on a site, it's the community it gathers, the detail it provides, and the interest in the setting.
The Gloaming Setting has been designed to provide enough information for a writer to jump in and independently act without having to constantly ask permission like they're the new kid at school. The rules are both strict enough and permissive enough to allow a character to be immersed into the world without that painful indoctrination period that plagues an individual on a new site. If you have questions, ask away, and be assured that your question will be immediately added to the site's informational structure to benefit other members and prevent needless interaction.
2. FACES. Characters and canon are not allowed to be under the age of twenty-one. We allow children to appear in story in very minor roles, just for back drop to help out with realism. We expect PHOTO REALISTIC representations, nothing cartoony. That said, we're not sticklers when it comes to the accuracy of a 'play-by' like other sites. You're just choosing a face, the build DOESN'T have to stay true to whomever it's attached to. These are fictitious characters, not fan-fiction representations, so make sure you read a writer's character description before you start imagining that their character may look precisely like the play-by they've chosen. Their face might have the body of Dwayne Johnson, or be much taller than the actual actor being used.
3. We DO NOT frown on 'godmodding' here because we don't believe in walls. To keep a story flowing you are well within your right to manipulate another writer's character so long as you don't place them in impossible situations or manipulate their dialogue. To properly write an antagonist and keep everyone on their toes, one will have to commonly manipulate other characters. To give forewarning every time this may be required is cumbersome and frankly, too controlling for a collaborative writing environment. Often one of the greatest inhibitors to the flow of writing are boundaries. We frown on the elements of a story being labeled with a "Mine" sticker. Here everything is "Ours".
4. CANON CHARACTERS. unless a writer makes a specific request, are open for everyone to equally use and portray. Canon are not character assets, they a sub-characters meant to be shared and developed to enrich the setting. Simply be responsible. If a canon seems personally entwined with a character don't frivolously depict that canon without first investigating the relationship and past portrayals. Most canon despite character interactions remain true to the write-ups, but there are a few canon that are specifically developed for a member-character's inner circle of sub-characters. Remember, though, no canon is off-limits. One does not get a greater sense of reality than when a writer touches upon a canon that is closely entwined with another character. NO PERMISSION is required for this. The setting is designed is to be fluid, interactive, spontaneous and at times, conflictive. That's just life.
5. TIME. Please ensure that you label the time that your story is taking place. The current time of year and month is the header of the site or it can be found in NEWS & WEATHER. We will write in this time period until it is decided to move on to the next month. You are allowed to write at any point in time in the designated time period. You will notice that we do not have an area for stories occurring in the past. All past events are written as flash-backs.
6. NO EXCLUSION. If a story is not tagged or labeled OPEN you can jump into that story at ANY TIME. It doesn't matter if there are a hundred posts, if it's active and open just dive right in. This is, of course, accounting for the fact that no one ever jumps into a story without first reading it and apprising themselves of the participating characters. This also accounts for the fact that if a person takes the time to make a character specifically to accommodate certain characters, theme and story arcs, current members MUST make an effort to include that character in the setting.
7. ALL CHARACTERS MUST BE ABLE TO PASS FOR HUMAN AND BE OF HUMAN INTELLIGENCE.
8. POSTING AND LOCATION. When the location of your story changes, start a new story with the same title in that location and put a 'CONTINUED FROM' and 'CONTINUED TO' link. Here, the stories move with the location, not the other way around. Settings change, sometimes after a single post and so will the location of the thread, instead of keeping it all in one post. This allows for other events to split off and other writers to be aware of events that may be simultaneous with theirs.
