LYCANTHROPES
Lycanthropy is a disease that genetically alters a human's (only humans) physiology, by recombining it with that of a large predatory land-mammal. The animal has to be mammalian and a predator which is a wolf, a large cat, or a bear. Geography also plays a part in the type of lycanthrope that a person becomes. In North America for instance, the only 'big cat' that a person would transform in an amalgam of would be a mountain lion.
At the time of the Gloaming certain people contracted the disease of lycanthropy and became the first lycanthropes. There are no lycanthropes from other realms, all lycanthropes were once humans from Earth's present reality.
Lycanthropes can force a change at will, but they will always transform during the full moon. Once the lycanthropy has transformed the person their first transformation will be upon the full moon. After that, they can learn to prematurely transform, of course it's not often desirable to do so. Once changed, there is very little of the person that remains, they become a hostile animal reacting everything living thing as a threat.
Lycanthropes are an amalgamation of their predatory mammal and their human form. They are bipedal, a minimum of seven feet tall and massively powerful. Their head is like that of their animal counterpart while their shaggy bodies are mostly humanoid, with their feet and hands resembling combinations of both, and they never have tails.
They are strong enough to flip over a truck and will survive all forms of damage that are not laced with silver or wolfsbane. While they do heal quicker than normal, lycanthropes do not rapidly regenerate. They are highly resilient to damage because they're in such a state of rage that they barely feel any pain, and any that occurs just makes them angrier.
CONSCIOUSNESS
After their transformation there is little left of the 'Human mind'. The beast takes over. They can be directed by a singular purpose and can be trusted not to murder anyone that their 'Human-self' is close to. Everyone else is fair game. They will change back after their set mission is complete, but if they transformed uncontrollably they will usually remain transformed for hours. There of course other factors that can change them back, such as certain forms of magic, the pressure of human will, and magical wards. The older a lycanthrope is the more control they have in their bestial form, but no one in this setting is close to this.
Lycanthropes while in their bestial state are prone to magical wards such as pentacles. Talismans and wolfsbane will deter the beast as long as nothing spurs them on, or entices them to bypass the ward. The scent of wolfsbane is not unlike cayenne pepper to their nose and the taste of it is repulsive to them. Rubbing wolfsbane in the wound of a lycanthrope will irritate and prevent healing until washed out. Silver in a wound causes a severe allergic reaction that prevents healing and infects the blood stream, making them very ill. Enough silver making contact with a lycanthrope's skin and entering their blood will slowly kill them. The only other way to kill a lycanthrope absent of this element and herb is by taking off their head which is extremely difficult to do with conventional weaponry.
LYCANTHROPES DO NOT PACK
In their bestial form, Lycanthropes may temporarily form alliances with others of a similar species that cross their path, of course they're also just as likely to fight them if there is no collective goal to base the alliance on. They do not actively seek others of their kind, preferring to be solitary.
Lycanthropes in their Human forms are generally stronger and retain some of the abilities associated with their 'animal-side', such as increased hearing and smelling. They also more resilient, possessing stronger bones, healing faster. Naturally their animal-side has a strong influence on their character. They are also just as prone to silver and wolfsbane. The closer they come to the full moon, the stronger and more sensitive they become. Technically they could be considered at their weakest during a new moon, but their mind and senses are at their sharpest.
A full moon will always hold her sway over Lycanthropes. While they are able to transform at will, the change becomes uncontrollable as the moon becomes full. There are of course certain ways they can prevent this, such as using silver manacles, or ingesting a concoction of wolfsbane to knock themselves out. It's far safer for them, because a change under the full moon produces the most deranged level of lycanthrope.
The only way to become a lycanthrope is by bite. These creatures are not born. Two people infected with lycanthropy will not produce a child with the condition. Once bitten, if the wound is not cleaned within an hour with a concoction of wolfsbane or cleansed with heated silver to sear the infected flesh the person will become diseased, but not all who are bitten will turn. Most become very ill, some even die from the infection, but those who do not become sick will turn upon the next full moon.
It is a common misconception that a Lycanthrope cannot use magic. Obviously in their bestial form that's a big "no", but when human they are able to practice lesser forms of incantations. As lycanthropes they are unable to master magic and perform complex spells, but they can still perform cantrips and the like.
