SHAPE-SHIFTERS
These are not lycanthropes. This category encompasses all myths and legends of preternatural creatures that can change into an animal. The French Canadian version of a were-wolf, the Loup-Garou is a good example of a shape-shifter.
Shape-shifters can only transform into one kind of animal, and we stress 'animal'. They DO NOT change into a mythological species (nothing like a griffon, or giant eagle). The largest animal that a Shape-sfhiter can transform into is a large bear or horse, the smallest is a crow-sized bird. There are no mouse, rat or song-bird shape-shifters, and on the other end of the scale there are no elephant or hippo Shape-shifters.
They can instantaneously transform into their animal form along with any clothes and personal items within a three inch bubble of their skin. Weapons the size of knives and pistols will accompany the transformation, but nothing larger, and it has to be an item that they carry often. Items that are commonly on the person of shapeshifter become familiarized and will be magically melded into their transformed state. New items will not transform.
While they can transform into their animal totem instantly, they cannot immediately change back and forth at will. Once they assume their animal form they have to remain in it for at the least five minutes.
They have a natural affinity for their animal type, and characteristics will cross over into their human form, such as some subtle mannerisms and attributes. They can summon these traits at will, such eye-sight or an enhanced sense smell.
They heal twice as fast as a human and partially retain the outstanding physical attributes of their animal form (totem) while human, such as a bear totem offering extra size and strength, a cat totem granting agility, the wolf totem giving endurance and extra speed. The human form of shape-shifter will also tend to possess facial and body characteristics relating to their totem animal. Bears tend to be burlier, cats more sleek and graceful, avians possessing sharp eyes.
Shape-shifters also develop the ability to mentally synchronize their consciousness with their animal type and experience the world through the senses of these creatures. They cannot control them, but they can use the animal to pin-point the location of whatever they're seeing. To do this the Shape-shifter must go into a trance and remain stationary. The range can be up to 25 kilometres, perhaps even greater.
Shape-shifters will always pass their magic on to their off-spring.
Loup-Garou
Loup-Garou, exist in French Canadian folklore and Europe. A shape-shifter that takes the form of a wolf, believed to be a spell could last for as long as 101 days, taking hold of the victim every evening, who was forced to wander the countryside in animal form. The spell might be broken if someone recognized the individual while transformed and could draw blood from the animal; neither person could speak of this incident, for fear of worse reprisals. Anyone could fall under suspicion of being a werewolf who had not made their Easter duty for seven years in a row.
These wolf-shapeshifter follow the sway of the moon, their transformation becoming more predominant as the moon becomes full, and in some cases are referred to as 'werewolves'. While they are not instinctively bound to pack mentality, those shape-shifters with wolf totems may be inclined to form them, especially if they are a part of a tight-knit community.
A shape-shifter wolf-pack exists in Omensvale, headed by Jared Waken. The pack does not have a name, because wolves tend not to entitle such things.
