APEX INSTITUTE
The Apex Institute is a multi-million dollar bio-tech facility of German origin that set it's sights on the small community of Omensvale back in 1983 when Jason Corvine was pushing to expand the city. Dead-set on it's construction he used his personal resources to circumvent city council, a decision that would tragically deplete his funds. In the years to follow, Corvine would fall ill from an incurable disease and would never see the building completed in 1988.
The Institute was initially unable to yield sufficient funds to maintain a sizeable work force and the building sat idle for five years until 1993 when it officially became 'Apex Institute', and served as pharmaceutical company until 2007 when the influence of new management took the company in the direction of agricultural biotech. After that, security significantly increased and the daily operations became highly secretive. The company started to take on more outside workers, and sections of the facility were restricted to specific personnel.
Today, Apex Institute is known for the significant increase in crop yields across the country. It boasts several, successful GM (Genetically Modified) Crops, and also yields a line of high-end skin-care products that are guaranteed to rejuvenate, called 'Unveil', the ironic billboards advertising the product spread across the city.
I.C.O.R.
On the surface, Apex Institute appears to be not unlike any bio-tech company these days. It maintains a staff of legitimate genetic designers and botanists, but it also harbours 'dark research' that occasionally leaks into the surrounding area. These are the areas influenced by ICOR, who use the facility to study 'The Gloam' and preternatural creatures. Not only do they control Apex, but they have strong influence over Omensvale as well, using the local paper, the 'Omensvale Observer' to obscure the truth and manufacture cover-ups for experiments gone awry. All writers are welcome to develop their own plots stemming from the Institute that will have an impact on the city, and stir up conflicts between the hidden forces of Krius and site protagonists.
Apex Institute possesses a highly trained security force capable of tracking down and capturing escaped test subjects which has alway left the residents of Omensvale questioning why a agricultural facility would require such a task force. There have been incidents through the years that have simply left a bad tasted in the mouths of the locals, sometimes literally, such as few cases where the drinking water was mysteriously contaminated with strange chemical that yielded strange results in the populace. The forces of Krius are always infiltrating Apex and surreptitiously working against them in an attempt to usurp their control of the biotech company and Omensvale.
