HIGH STRANGENESS
There is a relationship between preternatural beings, "gloams", and what can be best described as 'translocated' preternaturals. The latter, are creatures that exist between realms, manifesting fully in areas where the levels of magic are higher. Fully manifested preternaturals (like our characters) which mainly came into existence at the time of "The Gloaming" affect the environment and thus stimulate the activity of paranormal activity. As preternaturals tend to congregate around 'Gloams', their numbers will also increase the level of the paranormal activity.
To further clarify, there are basically two levels of preternatural. There are the inhuman entities that cannot be a part of the natural world and human society, and then there are those who are able to exist in the natural world. To prevent things from getting too complicated it's easiest to depict that a gather of preternatural beings will enhance paranormal activity in areas where there are less 'naturals' that are are going to neutralize the effect.
Preternatural entities that exist outside of human society will usually be unaffected by modern weaponry. Guns will fire, but the bullets won't touch them, or if they do, they will be incredibly resilient. It's archaic weaponry that's most effective against them. The general rule in this setting is that modern weaponry will NEVER have the advantage and have the least effect against preternatural entities.
MISSING 411
The Gloam that is Omensvale is a hotbed for missing persons. One minute a person is there, the next they're not. They may never return, or perhaps their body appears months later only a few meters from where they vanished. Sometimes the person shows up on the other side of the country with no knowledge whatsoever of how they got there or where they've been. It's a horrifying phenomena that the citizens live with everyday, many dismissing the stories as elaborations or "fake news". Anything to help them sleep at night.
The reality of these disappearances is 95% paranormal. Portals, time-slips, demonic attacks, the list goes on. Omensvale is plagued by this high strangeness on a monthly basis. There is no shortage of work for the heroic.
STORMS
Omensvale is famed for it's storms; few places in America frequent so many short-lived light shows. They always occur over Black Lake, a hot bed for meteorological anomalies. Massive thunderheads tower over the hills and circle around the dark waters, more often at night, fading by morning. Even in the Winter, at least one time a week, storms will still manifest over the lake, violent blizzards coupled with lightening and thunder.
To preternatural senses the storms reveal strange things in the sky. Shadowy forms of massive creatures can be glimpsed in the sheet lightening, enormous flying creatures soaring through the clouds, and even strange cities appear. The storms still up windows into other realms, and once in while the 'naturals' catch glimpse of this bizarre phenomena.
MYSTERIOUS LIGHTS
The Brown Mountain Lights, The Ozark, The Joplin and the Tri-state Spook Lights, such stories abound across America. Immigrants brought with them the tales of Will-o-the-Wisp and Native American legends are no stranger to the phenomena, and so Omensvale can add this form of high strangeness to it's repertoire.
In many cases, the mysterious phenomena of balls of energy floating over Black Lake are in fact 'Ball Lightning' phenomena. Scientists make an annual pilgrimage to the site to study it, and this provides an excellent cover for the magical orbs that are often spied in the forest. These are magical manifestations that can best be described as non-sentient elementals which may be termed as Will-o-the-Wisp. The lights are also harbingers and should be used accordingly. Interaction with the phenomena is rare, and they should always remain a mystery.
